Geography is the study of the Earth as our Home. We make ourselves at home on earth in three main ways and this correlates with three of the central concepts of modern Geography.
- Environment. We must transform physical and biotic systems to construct shelter and to feed ourselves. These changes create Second Nature out of First Nature.
- Space. To meet our subsistence and other needs, we rely upon other people in other places. These dependencies create a space of flows.
- Place. In making ourselves ‘at home’ we form attachments to certain places. We may understand ‘place’ as the attachments that give meaning to our dwelling on Earth.
